Hold Fast

"He trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel, so that there was none like him among all the kings of Judah after him, nor among those who were before him. 6 For he held fast to the LORD. He did not depart from following him, but kept the commandments that the LORD commanded Moses." (2 Kings 18: 5-6)

What made Hezekiah great? It was not his political policies. It was not his prowess on the battlefield nor his brilliance as a military strategist. The Bible does not record a long list of economic achievements under Hezekiah's reign.

All he did that set him apart from all the other kings was, held fast.

He held fast to the word of God and the commandments of scripture.

When the opportunity to sin came along, he held fast. When compromise for political or personal gain would have made life easier, he held fast. When the allure of folly and following what everyone else was doing called to him, he held fast.

Greatness in God's economy is not measured by fortune but faithfulness. Small compromises, little indiscretions and personal sins may seem harmless but corrode our character and destroy our legacy.

May God grant us the courage to hold fast to the only thing that will last, His word!
